Doctor's Role in Collaborative Medicine

Medicine is important for treating diseases. For example, a medical doctor gives medication to patients for fever. However, there are times when certain medication are not needed such as antibiotics. Doctors should not give patients antibiotics for people who have common cold because 1) Common cold is caused by a virus 2) Antibiotics do not work on viruses 3) There is no good evidence that antibiotics help with common cold disease.

The importance of medicine and not to abuse them

Medicine is important for those who are sick. However people who are not sick should not use medicine. People have used cough syrup not for treating sore throat but for getting myself drowsy to get a better sleep.  This is an example of substance abuse, not using medicine for its intended purposes. It is important to use medicine to treat an illness but it is bad if medicine is used to if someone is healthy. It is important to instruct patients how to take medicine properly and tell the patients the side effects and the effects of overdosing medicine. Patients should have been advised not to use medication outside from treatment.
